Guerilla QA: your site's search keywords as customer feedback

One of the key functional elements I'm working on for the redesign of my company's site is a tag cloud containing keywords people are entering into our internal search tool. As such, I'm flexing my JavaScript/CSS/XHTML/XMLHTTP savvy and Ajaxifying the UI, presenting everything as a nice tag cloud. So this means I'm tracking the terms people are entering to find stuff in our news archive.

And oh, the things you can learn from the data entered.

I've been reviewing several hundred such keywords entered over the last couple of hours, and I'm finding that people are trying to look content relative for navigation, credits, date-specific archives and more. This isn't the type of stuff that's really directly accessible from our Google-esque search tool, but this is great - free - feedback we can use for engineering our front-end.

    Hi Jason,
Good work on the new site! I have some suggestions / comments - let me know what you think of them.
    * consistent look and feel, the home page differs drastically from sub sections i.e. Police Blotter, Village Voice etc.. some of these sections either have very different options for the left navigation or have the left navigation missing all together. All of the sub sections have the new top navigation missing. You get the feeling that you got transfered to a completely different site at times, or hit a time warp button because the sub section looks like an old version of the new site. KHNL (http://www.khnl.com/) is an example of a generally consistent look and feel through out the site, also GuamPDN (http://www.guampdn.com) to some extent.

    * search feature: support for "any", "and" logic and phrases

    * i like the new video player, very cool!

I'm also interested in becoming a part of the KUAM.com Beta Tester Community - What do I need to do to sign up?
